Go Green
NELMAR believes that a comprehensive recycling program will result in a reduction of overall plastic production due to the reusability of the material. NELMAR dismisses the action of degradability and instead invokes the mantra: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.
Biodegradable plastic is not fully recyclable due to the inclusion of a 3% additive which is necessary to promote decomposition of the plastic. Due to the lack of sunlight, PH balance and other elements necessary to catalyze the decomposition process, a fully biodegradable plastic is difficult to achieve. In most cases only the degradable additive will decompose, leaving unusable tiny particles of plastic behind in landfills. The inability to recycle biodegradable plastic will only result in the production (and wastage) of more plastic.
NELMAR IS COMMITTED TO RECYCLING AND BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY GREEN
Plastic Recycling
Biodegradable Plastic
Recyclability
100% Recyclable
Cannot be recycled into new products (e.g., plastic decks, storage shelves) because the biodegradable additives will eventually cause the new products to decay and decompose.
Production of Plastic
Recycling plastic products into new ones will reduce the overall production of raw plastic.
Will increase demand for plastic production in order to compensate for the lack of recyclable plastic
Effects on Landfills
By recycling plastic products, we will also be saving valuable landfill space which is becoming more and more scarce.
Will not fully decompose due to the lack of the elements necessary for this process to occur. In most cases only the degradable additive will decompose leaving behind tiny plastic particles (plastic sand).
Environmental Facilities
Practically every city in the United States is equipped with at least one recycling facility.
Biodegradability can only be fully achieved in composting environment. Only two facilities exist in the United States (Pittsburgh, PA and San Francisco, CA) to serve a population of over 300 million
Product Life
There is no limit to the shelf life of products made from recycled plastic
The time lag between the manufacture of a plastic product and its integration into the market may be 6 to 18 months. This is enough time for the decomposition to begin, rendering the product unusable.
